Treasurers Report (Terry Coldridge): My proposal for next year is £25:00 per head membership. Based on previous years membership of say 26 @ £25:00 per head the income would be £650:00.Out of this income would come (1) Wine for each meeting. (2)Contribution towards Exe Cup. (3) Contribution towards new shirts for paid up members. The cost of each meeting next year to be fixed at £38:00 to include two's I am confident that with our existing Bank Balance a monthly meeting charge of £38:00 per month including two's is a very fair and sensible figure.
This suggestion was agreed by a majority vote.
2020/21 Captain (Bob Jones):
Everyone should be encouraged to play with other society members. We are a society and the idea is to play in any group whether it be the 1st group or the last and with any other members. Guests obviously need to play with the person who invited them. Much discussion took place but it was agreed that it is down to the captain to organise the order of play as best he can bearing in mind that some use buggies and some cannot arrive until later due to work commitments.
2022 Captain (Andy Bastow):
Vice Captain Rich read out a statement sent in by Andy:
Apologies to all for my non attendance at the AGM.
I would like to thank Bob firstly for asking me to be his vice Captain and secondly for all the hard work he has done this past 2 years. Terry and Nev have also put in an incredible amount of time and effort behind the scenes and I wish to thank them also. I hope that they will both continue their great work with guiding and assisting me in the year to come.
I am basically happy with the venues and handicapping system we currently have and don’t have any aspirations to change anything in these areas as they seem to work well now.
The only thing I would change would be adding an additional competition:
A competition that could take place which would involve the normal Stableford arrangement of four or three in a group but no player would know who their playing partners would eventually be until after the round is completed and names would be drawn ‘out of a hat’. The aim is to encourage individuals to aim for achieving their best possible score that would benefit their eventual team mates. This would involve players paying £1 each at the start.
Andy continued;
“By way of apologising to you all for me not being able to attend this meeting I would like to buy you all a drink and wish you a merry Christmas and a happy golfing year to come. Best wishes, Andy”
Mike Collins: Mike has bought shirts for 2022 which are blue with a white flash on the sleeve. Mike will sponsor the majority of the cost of the shirts but would like a contribution of £5 from each member towards the cost. This was agreed by a majority vote so the effective membership fee for 2022 will effectively be £30 (£25 + £5 for the shirt).
Dave Haizelden: Many players are discouraged from playing in the society because they have had their handicap cut so much that they have no realistic chance of coming in the prizes. Dave suggested that the starting handicaps for next year should be adjusted based on the finishing handicaps from this year as follows: Handicaps 10 and under - increase 3 shots; 11-20 increase 2 shots; 21-27 increase 1 shot. This was put to the vote and agreed by the majority. Nev will perform the required adjustments ready for the start of the 2022 season.
Aaron Haizelden: He suggested that perhaps we should have a sheet (like the Broadclyst Society use) where people can put their names down against the tee times so they can choose who they want to play with. It was agreed that it should be down to the captain to organise the starting order as best he can but could take on board any suggestions.
He also commented that Bob has done a great job doing the cards in advance but maybe the workload of the captain cold be reduced if people take a blank card and write their own name and handicap on the card. The latest handicaps being on a printed sheet brought along.
Nev remarked that he thought they way Bob was doing it was best as there have been lots of situations in the past where people don't check their society handicap and play off what they think they should play off. This makes a lot more work checking when the cards are handed in and increases the risk of the wrong person being awarded prizes because it wasn't spotted they played off the wrong handicap.
It was agreed that this again should be down to how the Captain wants to organise they day and make his mark on the society.
Kelvin Curtis:
We are a society – where we should all get the opportunity to meet new people – and thus play golf with different people at each meeting.
Finalise and agree a contribution towards Exe Cup – as the matter wasn’t resolved at last year’s AGM. My opinion is for it to be ‘lightly’ subsidised by club funds. This was discussed at length and was agreed that Trevor will select the team based on the performance so far in the Race to the Warren performance and those who sponsor event getting priority.
Slow play and our joint responsibility to manage / police it. Always a tricky one to discuss without an insinuation, suggestion of finger-pointing etc but needs to be addressed. Agreed by the majority
